<image:caption>Caoimhín Gaffney: 'Emerging too damp to catch fire', 2023. This medium format photograph installed at Bloom Studio florist has been developed by Caoimhín Gaffney as part of a larger body of work reflecting on the restorative power of nature alongside the reality of climate change - and resulting climate anxiety - through a fragmented representation of the landscape. Emerging too damp to catch fire engages a quiet register to examine the subject and is part of a series of photographs shot throughout Ulster; on Rathlin Island; and at Lough Sheelin and its adjoining bog in Cavan. Developed with the support of funding from Platform 31, the University of Atypical, and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bassam Al-Sabah: 'Reaching your wandering to my eye', 2023. These limited edition prints ('Reaching your wandering to my eye' and 'A scream floats among the flowers') installed at Fusco's ice cream shop are stills from the artist Bassam Al-Sabah’s artwork “IT’S DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE! TAKE THIS”, an ambitious 30-minute-long CGI film featuring ever-changing cinematic sequences from an imaginary video game. Combining fantasy, erotica and body horror, it follows the ambiguous “hero” undergoing numerous metamorphoses. “IT’S DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE! TAKE THIS” unravels and challenges the amped-up, constructed masculinity that video game avatars embody, as well as the associated idealistic connotations of progress, growth and transformation. In the film, external worlds merge with internal ones, the body’s selfhood untangles from the surface, and emotions flood in technicolour form.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Jennifer Mehigan: 'Girls Gone Feral VIII', 2018. The work 'Girls Gone Feral VII', installed at Fusco's ice cream, is part of a series of images originally shown as part of the Royal Hibernian Academy ‘Futures’ exhibition in Dublin in 2018. The opalescent formations depicted in this work were a part of a larger surreal landscape of stretched images of materials such as rhinestones, sequins, latex, leather bridles, and dog leashes. The symbols and textures in Jennifer’s works explore the tensions that exist between interior notions of self and external expressions of identity. ‘Futures’ is a sequence of annual exhibitions curated by the RHA that profiles the work of early-career artists based in Ireland around whom exists a growing critical and curatorial consensus.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Jan McCullough: 'Garage I' (2011, printed 2021) 'Garage I' is a small framed black and white image of Jan McCullough’s grandfather’s garage workshop. The artist is drawn to industrial places such as workshops, garages, factory floors and sheds, where others construct, assemble and make things, and the rituals and rhythms of the processes that define the work that happens in them. She often uses historical photography archives as starting points to connect with pragmatic and incidental gestures of work and working environments in different neighbourhoods. On the counter in Dawson Wright’s Hardware shop, where 'Garage I' is installed, you can find a new Belfast Collage Workshop kit that Jan has produced together with Household and designer Alex Synge that encourages children to play and imagine new worlds through collage making, using the unique AE McAlpine photographic archive of East Belfast people, streets, and shops.</image:caption>

Installed at Bloom Studios florist, 'Anesthesia Primavera' is a digital sketch/collage from a larger series of spring flower studies by Jennifer Mehigan. She is currently focused on stories of suppressed Irish lesbian historical figures and exploring their graves as horticultural sites. Through this, she hopes to uncover queer strategies for surviving our crises of kinship and climate.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Katie Watchorn: 'Get Away From It All (Cromac St)', 2022 (colour digital print). The title of this work, ‘Get Away From It All’ refers to escapism, holidays or time-off or a retreat from urban centre to the idyllic countryside. Often, the countryside is a place to pass through or to indulge in respite, as opposed to a being considered a highly contemporary place of labour, chaos, and technological development. 'Get Away From It All (Cromac St)' is a digitally layered poster of accumulated research made by the artist while living in Cromac Street in Belfast, installed at Bethany's Fruit Market. It is accompanied by one of a series of 8 unique cast aluminium babla (pearl millet) seed heads. Pearl millet is a domesticated grain that has been grown globally since prehistoric times.</image:caption>

'Floaters' and 'showground' are two images from a series of photographs taken by Locky Morris in and around Derry-Londonderry, where he lives and works. Installed at B&M ('Floaters') and next to Two Sisters ('showground'), they represent small encounters that surprise, excite and puzzle him, where often manmade objects intersect and interact with natural and urban environments. His images capture these accidental moments and thereby create deliberate, impromptu sculptural installations that demand attention and elevate the quotidian to the extraordinary.</image:caption>

<image:caption>‘Round the house and mind the dresser’; ‘Bishop’s Knotweed’; ‘The Repeat of the Union’, Array Collective, ‘An Dún’ Range. Array Collective have created three tea towels for this exhibition which are informed by elements of their immersive installation An Dún, commissioned by IMMA, Dublin. Each work features motifs sourced from the installation: rendered pipes reminiscent of handmade instruments; a blueprint featuring drawings of the invasive species Japanese knotweed alongside bishops’ robes; and drawings of pots and ornamental pieces placed within a traditional Irish dresser in the style of a 1920’s catalogue. An Dún plays with domestic tropes such as the ‘Good Room’ and connects these interior spaces of the home to futurist thinking and imaginative world building.</image:caption>

<image:caption>'Spilled Milk # 5' and 'Spilled Milk # 2', Tara McGinn. Tara McGinn's sculptural works in the exhibition connect the subjects of trauma, memory, and identity to the syntaxes of domestic spaces and notions of sentimentality. The work takes McGinn’s family home as a site of information; revealing motifs of trauma, memory and care using storytelling and multimedia through the objects, surfaces and textures of its interiors. The enigmatic sculptures in the Spilled Milk series are each carefully constructed using clay formed in a mould cast from glassware and crockery passed down through the generations as well as plastic food containers the artist collected when caring for their mother in her home.</image:caption>

They depict mimetic figures using imagery from celtic, biological and architectural sources. This series translates years of the artist’s unseen drawings into etchings, fusing together personal, national and evolutionary timelines.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Image of 'Jigs for [the Fabrication and Assembly of] Stool Legs', Jan McCullough. To create the images in the ‘Jigs’ series, Jan McCullough collaborated with a number of fabricators in Belfast to create a series of temporary architectural landscapes using their jigs – wooden custom made shapes that are used as tools to assist in the repeated cutting, placing and securing of their materials – in sculptural installations that she then photographed. The fabricators included scenic construction workers who support the film and TV industry that has come to dominate the East Belfast docklands area in place of more traditional manufacturing industries. Their highly skilled labour involves staging partial cityscapes; slices of town scenes, portions of buildings, etc. Much of their work is to create the unseen structures that underpin the authenticity of the sets. These images are intended as a series of temporary monuments to the inventive nature and evocative gestures of this usually invisible labour, and to a changing city.</image:caption>

Ailbhe Greaney’s works, The Light Beautiful (II): 13 Rue Des Beaux-Arts, Paris' and 'The Light Beautiful (I): 21 Westland Row, Dublin' attempt to bring the outside inside and make exterior the interior. The images were created in the rooms of Oscar Wilde's birth, 21 Westland Row, Dublin, and death, 13 rue des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Their titles reflect on the feeling Oscar Wilde had for light, as described in Kevin O’Brien’s book, ‘The House Beautiful: A Reconstruction of Wilde’s American Lecture’. Further references include Wilde’s collection of essays, ‘The Decay of Lying’, and poem, ‘The Ballad of Reading Gaol’, writing which touches on the concepts of beauty and mortality central to The Light Beautiful series.</image:caption>

<image:caption>To Make a Monument - East, 2023: Jan McCullough used the AE McAlpine photographic archive as her starting point for To Make a Monument -East. Albert McAlpine lived most of his life in East Belfast from 1923 - 1995, where he witnessed and recorded the changes that were taking place in his local neighbourhood. During this workshop at the Strand Cinema in East Belfast, together with participants, Jan playfully ‘collaged’ images from the archive and projected the resulting images in a dark room, linking the old cinema site with the streets surrounding it, depicted in the AE McAlpine archive. <image:caption>Research image: digital render of dry docks produced by Leandros Ntolas in August 2023 during a two week residency in Belfast. Leandros plans to create a site specific installation responding to a location in Belfast. He will use a multitude of elements, including projections, and interventions with light and sound, to transform the space and create a unique and visceral experience for the visitor. The work will use elements related to the past of Northern Ireland - from prehistory to modern times - and will incorporate symbols and iconography, folktales and myths, to create new connections.</image:caption>

In CHIPS WITH EVERYTHING, they worked with current and former residents of Sailortown to produce a collection of recipes and objects based on conversations and shared memories of growing up in Sailortown. <image:caption>The Shipyard Slips, 2020-2021: During lockdown in 2020, a group of people from Sailortown and beyond came together with artist and musician Ruth Clinton to form a digital choir and sing the song The Shipyard Slips (David Wilde 1977). The song is about the decline of the Belfast shipyards and details the hardships and historical events in the area. It references loss and longing for something, a narrative that resonates both with the history of Sailortown and the present day. Household held an audio installation of the work in the historic setting of Sinclair Seamen’s church in September 2021. It was also released online. The audio recording consisted of 22 ghostly voices routed across 6 channels over 6 speakers, which were spread across the 2 stereo channels to give a sense of space. The song can be played by clicking the image. Image designed by Sean Greer.</image:caption>

<image:caption>'Pass the baby under the donkey', 2020: As part of the project CHIPS WITH EVERYTHING, artist Thomas Wells listened to stories and gathered remedies, cures and recipes from Sailortown’s intergenerational communities of interest and place. Thomas explored the politics of the kitchen table with local women who gather and share wisdom, knowledge, and memories there. These exchanges centred around domestic and private spaces, and the rituals performed in them: On Samhain (31 October 2020), in the atmospheric settings of a local church, Thomas presented an exhibition of installation, sculpture and print, including a table set to host a meal. Selected works on display were activated through scent and included fabrics and plates, and handmade Bartmann jugs or ‘witches jugs’, believed to ward off evil spirits and witches in the 17th century. These reference a tradition of handcraft and forms of female knowledge that have frightened, inspired and been the foundation of our communities for centuries. They worked with young people at Clanmil Housing Association and, together with food educator Clare McQuillan, delivered two workshops for adults that will explore food preparation and knowledge. On the 25th May 2019, as part of the Belfast Maritime Festival, Tom, Clare and Household hosted a free flavour-focused public event at Sailortown's Mission To Seafarers, inviting visitors of all ages to sample dishes and some of the ‘edible stories’ created by the people of Sailortown. Students from the Masters of Architecture at Queen’s presented mapped histories of the neighbourhood, and gathered feedback and ideas from residents about its present and possible futures. Sailortown Regeneration provided tours of St Joseph’s Church, a local building undergoing a process of restoration. <image:caption>Horror Inc. Haunted House, 2018: On Monday 29th October between 6pm and 9pm in Sailotown's St Joseph’s Church, Household, young people living in – and with an connection to – the Sailortown neighbourhood, and a volunteer team guided visitors through an immersive experience collaboratively designed and built by the participants in a series of workshops held in September and October 2018. The theme of the Horror Inc. Haunted House was ‘the city will eat you alive’ and the event playfully explored horror in the context of the rapidly changing and encroaching city at a pertinent time in Belfast’s urban development. The Horror Inc. Haunted House was inspired by workshops with Household’s artist in residence, Sol Archer, part of the artist’s long term project The production of daily life, during which young participants made a horror film. Artists and others were invited to design opportunities for creative play, and Household staff organised activities and outings for the children and young people (a group of under 10s and a group of over 10s) attending the club. Working as a crew with artist Sol Archer, the group developed their own narratives loosely based around the past, present and future of the area and filmed members of the group’s performances at the Clanmil Housing Association community space and in public spaces across the Sailortown neighbourhood. Their films were presented at the Belfast Barra Market in August 2018, a project jointly delivered by Household, Sailortown Regeneration Group and Clanmil Housing Association, supported by Belfast City Council. <image:caption>The production of daily life, 2018-2021: The production of daily life was a multi-annual project designed and delivered by Sol Archer, the first artist invited to participate in Household’s artist-in-residence programmes in city neighbourhoods. From 2018 to 2021, at the invitation of Household, Sol Archer has spent time with and engaged with groups intersecting, identifying, or operating in Sailortown and the surrounding area: elderly former residents, new migrant communities, local grassroots organisations, and children and young people living in local social housing. The production of daily life positions the neighbourhood as a microcosm where histories are memorialised and (re-)enacted; the forces of regeneration and speculation are at play and can be playfully examined, and community and communities are formed and (re-)imagined. This three-year embedded residency programme included workshops, public events and screenings, the creation of a participatory Haunted House experience, documentation of oral histories, and an exhibition, and associated public programme of interviews and discussions, including a custom designed online platform. <image:caption>go beyond art 2017-2018: a student module designed by Household that encouraged Ulster University BA Fine Art students to engage with expanded definitions of public art practice. The module took its title from the first directive of the Situationists International – written by poet, artist, revolutionary thinker, editor, and filmmaker Guy Debord in 1963 – that called for artists to ‘go beyond art’, give up art making with a capital ‘A’ and continue their struggle in non-art fields and everyday life. The module was delivered in public spaces in and around Sailortown and encouraged students to use this fascinating historical Belfast neighbourhood as a starting point for developing their own approaches to Public Art production. The module was delivered by Household in collaboration with the Ulster University teaching staff and Sailortown Regeneration group. Activities included lectures covering brief histories of exemplary local and international public art practices; a history of Sailortown with Terry McKeown from Sailortown Regeneration Group; a Sailortown dérive; an introduction to Artistic Mapping/ Mapping Sailortown; Studio visits with Household for all the participating students; formal presentations of work and group discussions; and an exhibition of work made by students in response to the go beyond art module, exhibited in Sailortown. <image:title>Artists In Neighbourhoods All - The Imagined City</image:title>
<image:caption>The Imagined City Bus Tour, 2016: An Culturlann to the Falls Road murals. Artist Colin Darke presented an impossible performance based on Trout, a painting made in 1872/73 by the artist Gustave Courbet while imprisoned for his involvement in the Paris Commune, a radical socialist and revolutionary government that ruled Paris from 18 March to 28 May 1871. It depicts a trout on the verge of death after being caught by an angler, an apt metaphor for the brief and bloody uprising. Darke’s audio journey bore a direct relation to places along the route running from the Culturlann to the Falls Road murals. He invited us to imagine the Suicide Awareness centre; the Beehive bar; St Mary’s University College; the Royal Victoria Hospital and St Dominic’s Grammar School; the AOH building; Bobby Sands Mural and the Library relief sculptures; the closed Rebel’s Rest bar; the Jobs & Benefits building, Falls Leisure Centre and the Two Spires shops; and the murals as ‘characters’ as his script unfolded. Darke’s text was narrated by Ricki O’Rawe.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artists In Neighbourhoods All - The Imagined City</image:title>
<image:caption>The Imagined City Bus Tour, 2016: The Falls Road murals to Castle Street. Artist Paddy Bloomer invited participants to imagine the subterranean infrastructure of Belfast, telling the tale of several attempts to find a route from West to East of the city via drains and culverts (an underground pipe structure) – an almost impossible task in a city built on a bog. Over fifteen years ago, accompanied by his fellow explorer Nicholas Keogh, Bloomer entered Belfast’s underworld via the Blackstaff culvert by the side of the Westlink near the Donegall Road, an entrance which has since been blocked up due to redevelopment. Here they encountered muck, detritus, Willie McCrea vinyl records, potentially poisonous fumes and unimaginable sounds. Wading towards a light at the end of a tunnel beneath what could be Divis flats, they are confronted with a gaze from the city above, the source of which to this day remains a mystery.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artists In Neighbourhoods All - The Imagined City</image:title>
<image:caption>The Imagined City Bus Tour, 2016: Wellington Place to Templemore Avenue. Artist Aideen Doran invited listeners to suspend their disbelief completely to envision a dystopian future Belfast as a city submerged – a ruin within a murky lagoon, rich in marine flora and fauna but long vacated by human life. This is an imagined city where asking questions about the potential future for public art is an extraneous exercise. Global warming has reached its inevitable conclusion: sea-levels have risen uncontrollably, the oft-forgotten River Farset has bubbled up from beneath and subsequently swept away High Street, the Lagan has long ago burst its banks, and now, centuries after the Deluge, tourists are taken on subaquatic tours of the area to look for traces of a once-great (but catastrophically short-sighted) ancient civilisation. In this new world, the concept of ‘art’ as we know it, as with the concept of what is ‘public’ has changed so dramatically as to be almost unrecognisable. Doran’s hallucinatory future vision of the city is notably influenced by 1970s science-fiction literature, in particular texts such as J G Ballard’s The Drowned World, where a natural disaster causes a world constructed by mankind to transform into a brutally primitive landscape of unknowable possibilities. Doran’s text was narrated by Bronagh McCrudden.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Imagined City Bus Tour, 2016: Templemore Avenue to Sydenham train station. Charlotte Bosanquet revisited an idea that she proposed to the art space Satis House in 2012. Her proposal involved building a scaffold on the side of the building (a domestic house) which would remain for the duration of the show, offering a new view of and from the house and that could be used for a range of activities during the exhibition. The terms of this proposal being rejected as a viable exhibition were based on the potential danger it might cause to those visiting it or living in the house. The artist used this example as a starting point to question the increasing limitations imposed upon artworks in the public realm and examine the ever-changing threshold of what is considered a risk and what is considered safe for audiences as they encounter an artwork. Bosanquet’s text was narrated by Elodie Fabre.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Imagined City – International to Local: UK Case Studies, 2016: Events such as Glasgow International not only give local and international artists the opportunity to generate and exhibit ambitious new work but also create transformative experiences for other people living and working in city spaces, making them culturally confident and more responsive citizens. During her presentation, Glasgow International Director Sarah McCrory spoke of her work for the festival, a Glasgow City Council funded initiative. She described how the festival has grown year after year with local authority support and through ongoing conversation with the council. She highlighted the fact that the festival always shows cutting edge contemporary art and presents quality thematic programming in partnership with other organisations across the city. With every iteration, there is significant investment in commissioning new work from Scottish and international artists and thanks to this the festival has developed a critically acclaimed international profile. She spoke of the economic benefits of having a high profile visual arts festival in Glasgow and presented some of the financial figures from the inaugural festival in 2010 to 2016.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Imagined City – International to Local: UK Case Studies, 2016: For the last decade, Alistair Hudson was the Deputy Director of Grizedale Arts in the Lake District, an organisation which gained critical acclaim for its radical approaches to working with artists and communities, based on the idea that art should be useful and not just an object of contemplation. Hudson was appointed as Director of Middlesborough Institute of Modern Art in October 2014. In his talk in Belfast, Alistair presented his much-discussed approach to programming at mima. He stated that the passive role of the art and the art institution is completely redundant and that art and the institutions that support and present it should above all be useful and strive to be embedded within the local. His vision for mima is based on the concept of the ‘Useful Museum’, an institution dedicated to the promotion of art as a tool for education and social change. The museum and its contents are formed and shaped by its users and it exists as a project or tool.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artists In Neighbourhoods All - The Imagined City</image:title>
<image:caption>The Imagined City – Living & Working Economies: Artists in the City, 2016: During the Living & Working Economies: Artists in the City talks, Kamiel Verschuren delivered a presentation showing the timeline of the development and revitalisation of an area in south Rotterdam, delivered via innovative public art projects and low-cost housing schemes for artists. The south of Rotterdam is considered the poorest area of this city, with a quickly increasing population and rising unemployment rate. It is cut off from the rest of Rotterdam, with physical barriers such as the River Maas as well as social and psychological barriers such as the area’s high, often unintegrated, immigrant population and historically high crime rates. At NAC Foundation, Verschuren has created an alternative economy to employ, fund and house artists in a specific area of Rotterdam. The city’s housing association provides the NAC foundation with rent-free housing in run-down parts of south Rotterdam. Artists and creative practitioners pay a low rental charge to NAC per month to live in these properties, providing NAC with an annual income from approx. 100 rentals. This agreement allows rents to remain low and affordable for artists and creative practitioners but also generates an internal, self-sustaining funding structure. NAC pays the resident artists to undertake the renovations of their respective rented accommodation themselves from the money collected from rents and equates to a substantial annual public investment in the neighbourhood per year. By demonstrating the monetary value of the work carried out, NAC has been able to secure match funding from local government. This income is also used for the MYA fund (Move Your Ass, Mind Your Area), where NAC resident artists can apply for money for their own artistic projects, which must demonstrate some benefit to the local community.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artists In Neighbourhoods All - The Imagined City</image:title>
<image:caption>The Imagined City – Living & Working Economies: Artists in the City, 2016: Jon Wakeman, founding member of East Street Arts in Leeds, described how the organisation has grown over 12 years from a temporary art exhibition in a vacant shop to a charitable organisation with 21 staff, an organisational headquarters, seven venues, 90 studio spaces, four project spaces, a 34-bed hostel and one live/work house, located across Leeds. East Street Arts have created a very successful alternative economy to support their artistic community in Leeds. By purchasing properties for studios they avoid paying money (both their own and cultural funding) to private landlords. This also offers security to artists in the city, whose studio groups are often leased under temporary rental agreements and find that the areas they move into are improved directly/made more desirable by the presence of artists, often resulting in them being priced out. East Street received Arts Council, EU, and Leeds City Council funding in order to buy Patrick Studios, a process that took four years. They also run a rates relief scheme, by using their charitable status to exempt landlords from rates when they agree to let East Street use their buildings. Rates relief has been used in Belfast previously by Household to secure temporary residency projects as part of the the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival and the studio group Platform Arts currently have a rates relief agreement enabling them to run their studio group and gallery building on Queen Street. In addition to receiving initial investment from funders, East Street Arts also charge landlords to avail of the rates relief they provide, arguing they are providing a service by not only allowing private property owners to save on rates but also often adding value to the building through renovation and positive use.</image:caption>

<image:caption>To contextualise how space in the city is used and to critically examine the connotations of the term ‘home’, Household organised a programme of talks in the Ormeau Road Library. Speakers included Declan Hill from the Forum for Alternative Belfast, who spoke about the distribution of green space and trees in the city and how this can affect inner-city neighbourhoods and their perceived ‘value’. Ray Cashell, Chair of Shelter NI, discussed housing issues and tenants’ rights in rented accommodation. Lynne McMordie and fellow staff members, as well as service users from the Welcome Organisation, a charity addressing the needs of people who are homeless or sleeping rough in the city, spoke about their experiences of homelessness, makeshift housing and what it means to be without the security of a home. A discussion between Eugenie Dolberg – a curator and photojournalist who, as part of the project Open Shutters Iraq, lived and worked with a group of Iraqi women for three months – and Belfast Exposed Director Pauline Hadaway concluded the programme of talks. Their conversation focused on private and public space, and how ‘the private’ and ‘the public’ are jeopardised in both Middle-Eastern and Western society</image:caption>

<image:caption>Image: 'not only the earth we share' was an exhibition of film and sculptural installation by Household’s artist-in-residence Sol Archer at Golden Thread Gallery (24 April – 29 May 2021). The exhibition was curated by Household and examines the past, present, and future of a small neighbourhood in Belfast called Sailortown. A custom-designed website by NONGRAPHIC allowed viewers to watch extracts of film from the exhibition and other documentation captured by Sol since 2018.</image:caption>
